The Paradox in Private Banking

As private bankers, the mantra of being client-focused rings familiar. Yet, an interesting paradox exists within this industry. 
 
Through numerous interviews with private bankers and wealth advisors, we have found that many experience a common challenge: the inability to pay attention to the client at the moment.  

In the middle of a conversation with a client, we are likely to find ourselves with thoughts like: 
 
- “How will I get the client to buy this idea?”  
- “How will I solve this problem?”  
- “What will I say when the client finishes talking?”  
- “How can I appear as an expert?”  
- "How can I impress the client with my technical skills?”  
 
Our task as advisors is to be fully present with our clients, help them see things from a fresh perspective, and make well-informed decisions.  
 
This requires a complete change of skills and mindset.  
 
It can be unsettling to find that the client is primarily interested in having his or her problem understood, in all its emotional and political complexity, as a precondition for diagnosing and solving it. 
 
*Before* giving advice, take a moment to understand your client deeply. Build a genuine connection to guide them through informed decision-making and progress. 

Here are a few suggestions on how you can do that:  

Practice Active Listening

  • Engage in active listening during client interactions. 

  • Focus on what the client is saying without formulating responses in your mind. 

  • Demonstrate understanding by paraphrasing and reflecting on their key points. 

Minimize Distractions

  • Create an environment free from distractions during client meetings. 

  • Silence electronic devices to avoid interruptions. 

  • Allocate dedicated time for client interactions, ensuring no competing priorities. 

Embrace Mindfulness Techniques

  • Incorporate mindfulness practices to stay present in the moment. 

  • Take conscious pauses to center yourself during conversations. 

  • Cultivate awareness of your thoughts and redirect focus to the client's needs.
